DivaCup Review + Giveaway

This post is for ladies only. For the handful of men who I know read this blog; consider yourself warned!!

The past year for economical, health and earth-related reasons, our family has been re-evaluating everything that we buy, use, dispose of. In my journeys, I came across DivaCup and was intrigued. The idea seemed a bit radical and I put it on the back shelf {of my cluttered mind} until about 6 months ago when I stumbled across it again and this time, I was ready to give it a shot!

I mentioned the idea to my husband, who immediately dismissed it. He thought it was icky, messy and said, “Oh, Jenn, we’ll just spend the money and buy tampons, we’re not poor. Please don’t get that.” {For the record, DH has always been a little hesitant with many of my “ideas” such as choosing a midwife, homebirth, cloth diapering etc. but when he gets on board, there’s no stopping him! LOL}

I ended up finding a coupon code and in conjunction with a sale, purchased a DivaCup to try anyway. Could it be worse than the leaking I usually experience?

Between November 2005 and Spring 2009 I actually only had one period. I was pregnant or nursing the whole time. When my period returned in 2009, it seemed to come back with a vengeance. I found my periods were heavy and that I needed to use pads as back up with my tampons; especially that first day. I began to wonder if there wasn’t a better way; a less messy way.

My DivaCup arrived; they offer two sizes depending on your age and if you have had children. My period arrived shortly after the DivaCup so that worked out well and I was excited to try it.

\That first month, it leaked a bit and I used panty liners as a little backup. {Well, not really leaked but more like light spotting}. I found that I needed to adjust the position of the cup. I read some tips on positioning. The DivaCup FAQ section is so helpful. Once I found the right position for me, I’ve not experienced any leaks! I’ve used the cup for about 6 months now and I am thrilled. I put in in, and wear a panty liner the first day {to be cautious} but that is it. During the first day or two when the flow is heavy, I empty my cup about every 4-6 hours and the following days, I empty it in the morning when I wake up and before I go to bed; that’s it!

I never worry about emptying it at night and have yet to have a leak!

When I was considering DivaCup, I had concerns about the possible messiness but after trying it, I realized my fears were unfounded. I believe that the DivaCup is less messy than pads for sure and much cleaner than leaking tampons! I believe that the cup is also much hygienic and sanitary that either of those options. It’s easy to put in (with a little practice to get it just right), easy to remove and easy to clean; simply wash with an unscented soap and hot tap water. If water isn’t available, you can simply empty it and wipe it out; washing it at the next available opportunity.

The Press Release is quite interesting and brings up the fact that DivaCup users are not only saving their money but also the environment. Less manufacturing, less trees being used, less waste heading to the landfill…

I’m heading to Africa this week, and we’ll be gone three weeks. I will be expecting my period while we’re gone but thanks to DivaCup, I don’t have to worry about packing boxes of sanitary supplies. I simply have to pack my diva cup (in it’s cute little storage pouch) and I’m covered! DivaCup makes travelling worry-free!

(this is what I am packing to take care of my needs while away!)

To date I’ve only used tap water and unscented soap to wash my DivaCup but this week I ordered some DivaWash. I’ll let you know how it goes.

The DivaCup is made of a clear top-quality, health care grade silicone which is free of artificial and chemical-based dyes so obviously latex allergies are not an issue with this.

I know I’ll be Sizzling this Summer, worry-free and leak free. Will you?

I’m sure you have many other questions and to write a post answering them all would take more time than I have. Most of your questions will probably be addressed in the DivaCup FAQ so check there first but if you’re still at a loss, simply contact them!

If you have any questions about my experience with DivaCup, just ask!

  12. The DivaCup does not work if you have given birth vaginally. Be aware of this. They do not offer a refund if this happens.
I know there are two models but even the one meant for women who have had children does not work. I find it falls out.

Just be warned. Unless you gave birth vaginally and magically, all your junk snapped right back into place, I would not recommend this product.

    • Hi Amanda,
That’s too bad that your experience wasn’t a good one. I suppose it is like anything where it works for some and not for others.
I’ve had two natural homebirths (2007, 2008) and I am thrilled with it the cup though initially I did have some leakage. The DivaCup website as well as some other forums I found online had some tips and suggestions for positioning that helped me.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

  13. I have a size 1 but recently gave birth so would love to win this to upgrade to the size 2.

  14. I have heard of it, but always though “gross!” – so I’ve never used it. After reading more about it, it actually doesn’t sound gross anymore.

  15. Yes I have heard of Diva cup and I also noticed it on Well.ca I’m just waiting to finish all my feminine hygiene products before I make the switch 😉

    • Hi Dawn. I was just at your blog and didn’t see my button up. Just wanted to let you know that in case you meant to put it up after commenting and forgot. If this comment is chosen and the button isn’t up at that time, I am sorry but this comment will not be valid and a new entry will be chosen.

      Thanks 🙂
